New Research: “Demand Sensitive” Drought Index

Research from Columbia Water Center scientists and affiliated researchers has yielded a new “demand sensitive” drought index. Unlike the many existing indices, which are essentially supply-based, this index is the first to directly connect existing or projected water demand to the potential water deficit during a drought.

    When it comes to using groundwater, the timing of the effect of the demand on drought conditions is complicated. Is this accounted for?

    In the Punjab, are there any analyses or descriptions (even informal) of streamflow depletion caused by the pumping and declining groundwater levels?
